The origami modular swan is made from 480 rectangles. Each rectangle is folded into an origami triangle with two flaps and two pockets. They can then be connected by inserting the flaps into pockets, then layering it all up to create 3D abstract models.

This swan took me about nine hours to fold over two days, which is a long time compared to my usual work. The result, however, is well worth it :D

The swan may look complex, but it’s actually incredibly easy. Folding the triangles is beginner level, it’s just folding so many of them can get very tiring indeed :(

Connecting the triangles together is a lot of fun, especially if (like me) you enjoy building with interconnecting pieces like Lego, etc.

All in all, the origami modular swan is great for someone at begginer/intermediate standard, with a lot of time on their hands, who wants to make something very impressive without having to follow a lot of confusing, complex diagrams.

On the other hand, I fold because I love the complex folding patterns, and I also prefer origami to be folded from one uncut square. So modular origami is not really my thing. That being said, I would definitely fold a modular origami model, such as the swan, for a gift or decoration because they really are impressive to look at.
